International Yoga Day 2023



In June 2023, Unmasking Pain reached new heights when it successfully brought together BSDC, Arts Council England and Durham University with the Consulate General of India, Birmingham, in a celebration of International Yoga Day. With the attendance of former Vice Consul, Shri Naresh Singh Rana, this day sowed the seed of future collaboration between these four institutions.


2023 to 2024



On June 21 2023 ,BSDC hosted the renowned Yakshagana troupe from the Yakshadruva Patla Foundation, engaging both Unmasking Pain participants and the general public in a vibrant celebration of International Yoga Day at the Durham Botanical Gardens. Notable attendees included former Vice Consul, Shri Naresh Singh Ran Professor Paul Chazot from Durham University's Department of Biosciences, Rob Lynes, Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor Global, and Kristian Pellissier from Arts Council England.

Artist Devika Rao supported the event with a yoga practice session, allowing participants to engage at their own comfort level. Following this, the Yakshadruva troupe performed traditional Yakshagana tales, accompanied by professional musicians from India. Additionally, mask-making workshops were held, providing insight into the troupe's intricate preparation of makeup and costumes.

The day was a remarkable celebration of creative practices for health and wellbeing, showcasing the power of arts and culture in fostering community and holistic health.
