Dewey

Dewey is a series of performances taking place across libraries nationwide, that explores the intersection between classical Indian Dance and the Dewey classification system. Through a series of interactive performances, we transform libraries into vibrant cultural hubs by engaging with diverse audiences such as community groups, the elderly, migrants, and those focused on health and well-being.

Using a blend of contemporary and classical Indian dance, Dewey aims to reconnect communities with their local libraries, spark cultural conversations, and challenge traditional views of performance spaces, all while showcasing the captivating artistry of the company’s diverse art-forms.

Bringing books to life

BSDC, in conversation with libraries across the country, has been exploring how its varied repertoire and the Visual Literacy of Classical Indian dance can transform libraries into performance spaces on the theme of the Dewey classification system. A subject close to the heart of librarians as an interactive and collaborative journey with strategically developing work with library staff for public users in general as well as community groups, the older population, migrant groups, and health and wellbeing focused.

As we live in a world where literature is readily accessible through our screens, some have become disconnected from the enjoyment of reading a physical book. To rekindle this connection, and promote libraries as the perfect space to do so, Dewey encourages people to have a digital detox and rediscover the tactile quality of books.

Through this innovative performance, BSDC re-engages local communities within the library space, generate important cultural and artistic conversations, and push the boundaries of what constitutes ‘normal’ performance spaces for dance. The format of the performance can vary depending on the level of interest and particular setting of library spaces, audience interest as well as integration of new material into the framework of the piece and librarian collaboration.
