Sanchita Mazumdar
Sanchita is an Indian classical dancer whose work is deeply informed by her lived experiences. Drawing from her personal journey, she transforms and expands her art form to be inclusive, educational, and often thought-provoking. As a Kathakar—a storyteller—Sanchita uses dance to connect with others, initiating meaningful conversations through storytelling that weaves together unique movements and creative imagination. In recent years, her approach to dance has become increasingly holistic, with a particular focus on enhancing both her own and her participants’ physical and mental well-being. She combines creative expression, movement, and social connection to support a deeper sense of health and engagement. In her practice, she embraces dance as a non-verbal language—a powerful medium for emotional expression and communication. Notably, she has integrated British Sign Language (BSL) into her performances, enriching her storytelling and making her work more accessible and resonant.

As a Kathak dancer and choreographer living with multiple physical disabilities, the journey back to my artistic practice has been anything but straightforward. Yet, working with Balbir Singh Dance Company has been a transformative experience — both personally and professionally.
The company has not only welcomed me with openness and respect, but has also provided a deeply supportive environment that honours individuality and values difference. I have been trusted and encouraged to contribute meaningfully to a wide range of projects, including those with health issues such as fibromyalgia, dementia. I have been working with breast cancer research project and on behalf of BSDC I was a part of Thinking Ahead film which was a humbling experience for me.
As an artist working with the nature is a part of my art form and I absolutely enjoyed while working in the natural settings of Durham’s botanical garden, Oriental museum and Beamish museum using the concepts of colour, food, our senses and the nature with all its health benefits.
These projects have connected me to diverse communities and allowed me to see how dance can speak across boundaries and offer healing, expression, and belonging.
Collaboration lies at the heart of Balbir Singh Dance Company. I have had the privilege to work alongside dancers, musicians, photographers, and multidisciplinary artists — all of whom bring their own depth and creativity to the table.
Despite ongoing physical challenges, I have been able to return to the studio, to choreograph, to perform, and to grow. This experience has reaffirmed my identity as an artist and has been instrumental in restoring my sense of purpose, resilience, and joy in movement.
